On 23rd May, 1918, the 20th London battalion of 141 Brigade, 47th Division, left their camp in Hénencourt Wood and moved forward to front line 1500 yards south-east of the town of Albert which had been captured by the Germans in their March offensive. They remained here until relieved on 3rd June. The Battalion Diary entries for this period are brief and contain little besides ‘heavy shelling’, ‘normal day’ and ‘working in battalion area’. Francis King was killed on 26th May, probably as a result of this heavy shelling. |
